Wooden Knitting Needles

I learned to knit in a summer school class when I was a kid. My mother didn't knit, but she had an old pair of wooden needles lying around that she gave me to use. I learned only how to cast on and knit rows of garter stitch, but I had a lot of fun with it.

Later on I tried knitting with metal needles. The frustration of having stitches always falling off the slippery, metal needles at times when they weren't supposed to drove me to give up knitting every time. Trying yet again, I did finally succeed in making a whole top, despite the metal needles wanting to foil my plans.

Now that I'm using wooden needles on my current project, I realize how much more relaxing it is for me to use them compared to using metal ones. Some people like metal needles because they can knit faster with them, but I don't care about that, as you can see by how long it's taking me to make one pair of socks. ;)

Great story! I prefer bamboo myself, but have had to resort to metal when I JUST COULDN'T WAIT and had to get a certain size RIGHT NOW. When I teach knitting to kids, I try to get their parents to buy them wooden or bamboo, as those little hands have an especially hard time balancing the metal and the knitting all at once. I do understand them not wanting to spend a lot of $$ on something the kids may or may not continue with, but I think they will just do better with better supplies and really, it's not THAT much more! But what can you do? I just pray that the kids will some day find that they've learned something they can enjoy and maybe bless someone with. Despite the awkward needles!!
